For example, trial by jury has had a spotty history in the Chinese legal system. Introduced in 1954, trial by jury was abolished in 1975. The right to a jury trial resurfaced three years later before being abolished again in 1982. Before 2004 when jury trials were reintroduced, white collar criminal cases were decided by a single judge.

Just as the level of rights available to the accused may vary, so do the cultural perceptions of crime. What may seem a routine offense in the United States may be viewed as a much more serious offense elsewhere in the world. For example in 2007, an executive of the Chinese Food and Drug Agency was executed for taking bribes and other white collar crimes.
