International Violent Crime Defense LawyersViolent CrimesAs nations have linked together in fighting certain types of crime, the landscape of international criminal law has become very complicated. American citizens charged with a violent crime travelling abroad may face legal action from one of many legal authorities, including host country, international organizations and even the United States government. As in sex crime cases, the U.S. Department of Justice is stepping up prosecutions against Americans who are accused of committing violent crimes overseas. The case against Charles MacArthur Emmanuel, an American citizen and son of former Liberian President, Charles Taylor, will test a 1994 U.S. law which criminalizes torture and other violent crimes regardless of whether the crimes were committed on American soil. Even combat personnel in America’s armed forces can be charged with violent crimes. Violent crime charges can arise in peaceful areas of operation—most recently by the charges brought against a U.S. Marine accused of rape in Okinawa. The conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan has demonstrated that violent crime cases can be brought against service personnel engaged in combat, with over 200 convictions on violent crimes charges leveled since the conflicts began. Criminal proceedings are draining on an emotional level. When those proceedings are taking place overseas, family and friends may feel unable to help. If a friend or a family member is facing international violent crime charges, contacting an international defense attorney is an important first step in making sure that justice is served. The International Legal Defense Council (ILDC) is a New York-based professional association of international criminal defense lawyers. ILDC members, Michael Griffith, Meg Strickler, and Dan Conaway, are international criminal defense attorneys who have participated in some of the most important international criminal cases of modern times. Together, the ILDC team possesses decades of professionally recognized and respected experience as criminal defense attorneys. The ILDC criminal defense lawyers pursue all available avenues of support for American clients facing violent crime charges abroad, including prisoner treaty exchanges, administrative lobbying, and coordinating legal defense with foreign lawyers. International Legal Defense Council lawyers also provide legal assistance to the overseas employees of American companies. An international criminal conviction on a violent crime charge could shatter the lives of the traveler and his or her family. You do not have to face this time of trial alone.
