Our Services

We Will:

Local Counsel

We will locate, interview, and retain the services of local counsel. One of the major problems for the families of American citizens arrested in foreign countries is finding and retaining the appropriate local counsel (a lawyer who specializes in criminal law and knows the local court system). Then, once the family has hired them, making sure the local counsel actually works on the family member's case and does not "rip them off." The attorneys of ILDC will handle this entire process for you as they have the legal knowledge, international experience, and an established network of foreign attorneys throughout the world to choose from. In the event our attorneys do not know a specific lawyer in that country or if there are several candidates, we will travel to the country and interview the most qualified candidates and then choose the best one for you.

Once local counsel is hired, our attorneys will manage the work of local counsel by paying him or her 1/3 of the retainer up front, 1/3 during the case, and 1/3 when the case is completed. Our attorneys will learn the appropriate rate for the legal services provided in the foreign country where the case resides so that you are charged this local rate and not "ripped off" as "rich Americans". Our attorneys will then continue to supervise the work of the local attorney until the case is completed. This will ensure that the local attorney does not abandon the case once he or she is retained. All funds to be paid to the local attorney will be paid into the Attorney Trust Account of ILDC and held in escrow until the appropriate time when they will be dispersed by ILDC to the local lawyer.
